A Pence-worth of Advice

(Beware of mirthless demagogues)
by Jim Rapp

Mind, mind the joyless
who, when they are laughing, sting –
humor without joy.

Hear, hear the harshness
of joy-benighted ringing –
clanks on mean alloy.

Fear, fear the coldness
that a pasted smile brings –
no tincture of joy.

Turn, run; the ruthless
serpent's gaze will do you in –
'guiling eyes its ploy.
