Monogamy

by Jim Rapp

rushing
from the north
hoary snow
flies
to the faithful
outstretched arms
of the
old pine tree
assured
through
many winters
past
she
is welcome there

her
full embrace
will last a day
perhaps
a day
a night
and then
another day
before
her ardor
quickly
melts away

but
ever green
he’ll stand
and dream
through
June
July
through
summer’s time
through
Autumn’s clime
as
other winds
wooing
and
enticing him
blow
through his
waiting
boughs
